Selecting the appropriate state from the list below will open a document that can be printed for university business purposes only. An exemption certificate may not be used to make purchases for personal use.
Indiana
Special rules in Indiana: The Indiana Department of Revenue has updated their rules regarding sales and use tax exemptions for nonprofit tax-exempt organizations. Indiana vendors can no longer honor a sales tax exemption when the purchase is not made directly by the nonprofit organization. All exempt purchases in Indiana will have to be made with University funds directly. Reimbursable travel costs, such as food and lodging, are no longer exempt from Indiana sales tax or innkeepers tax.
Missouri
Exemption expiration: The most recent Missouri exemption certificate issued to Washington University by the State of Missouri has an effective date of 07/11/2002 and does not have an expiration date. The Missouri Department of Revenue does not issue dated exemption certificates.
Form 149: The Missouri Form 149 is a sales tax exemption certificate that is to be used for claiming an exemption from Missouri sales tax based on the type of purchase being exempt. The Missouri Department of Revenue has confirmed numerous times that the Form 149 is not applicable to university purchases and is not the appropriate document to provide to vendors. Washington University purchases are exempt from sales tax as a result of the type of entity that we are and, therefore, we are to provide our sales tax exemption certificate.
Form 5060: Contractors needing a Project Tax Exemption Certificate, Form 5060, should contact their Facilities zone manager or project manager at (314) 935-5500.
